Northern Ireland youngster makes solid impression on Arsenal debut

Northern Ireland youngster Daniel Ballard seemed to impress as he made his senior Arsenal debut last night.

Ballard is fighting fit after recovering from knee surgery last summer.

The 20-year-old sustained a meniscus injury 12 months ago, ending a loan spell with Swindon Town after just three games.

It has been a long road back for Ballard, whose return was further stalled by the coronavirus pandemic earlier this year.

Last night he made his senior Gunners bow in a pre-season win over MK Dons.

Mikel Arteta's side secured a 4-1 victory in their first friendly of the summer, with Ballard coming on as a second half substitute for William Saliba.

Football London said the Northern Ireland player "defended adequately", rating Ballard 5/10.

They said: "One neat flick of the ball to a team-mate deserves endless gif-ing. That aside he defended adequately indeed. 5"

Ballard has featured for Northern Ireland's Under 19 and 21s but was called up to the senior international squad in March 2019 when Michael O'Neill drafted the youngster for the Euro qualifiers against Estonia and Belarus.

The Arsenal defender has played for the Gunners at U23 and U18 level and captained the squad that reached the FA Youth Cup final in 2018.

He is a product of Arsenal's Hale End academy and signed as a scholar in August 2016.

Ballard signed his first professional contract with the club in 2018.
