Northern Ireland Women break into World's top 50 for first time ever

The Northern Ireland women's football team has surged into the World's top 50 for the first time ever.

Kenny Shiels' side have enjoyed a meteoric rise in 2020 despite the worldwide coronavirus pandemic.

Four successive wins in their Euro qualifiers saw Northern Ireland reach next year's play-off, and a chance to reach a historic first-ever major finals.

Northern Ireland's recent success has seen them move up six places in the latest FIFA Coca-Cola World Rankings to reach 49th on the list.

The senior women’s team had not won a competitive match in five years prior to defeating Faroe Islands 6-0 in Torshavn back in September.

They went on to win their double header against Belarus and then defeat the Faroes at the start of this month to finish second in their group and reached the play-offs.

The draw for the play-offs will be made in early March after all qualifiers have been completed. The play-offs, which are scheduled to be played over two legs, will be staged in April.
