Northern Ireland weather warning issued for ice

A weather warning has been issued for Northern Ireland as ice is set to hit the country.

The yellow warning comes into effect from 2am on Tuesday and is valid until 10am.

The Met Office said that "icy patches and hill snow may lead to some travel disruption early on Tuesday" before adding we can expect "some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths".

Temperatures could plummet to as low as -1C tonight ahead of the weather notice coming into place.

For Monday evening, the Met Office said the "north coast may see a shower. Otherwise dry with a frost. Rain and high ground snow are likely to spread to western areas later".

This morning the PSNI said: "Driving conditions are hazardous on many routes this morning due to freezing temperatures.

"Please avoid all unnecessary travel and if you must venture out, please reduce your speed and drive to suit the conditions."

It comes as Katesbridge was the coldest recorded spot in Ireland last night as it hit -10C in the Co Down hamlet.

Yesterday police closed the Divis Road, Hannahstown as the conditions were "treacherous" due to snow and ice, asking members of the public to avoid the area.
