Northern Ireland weather warning for thunderstorms issued by Met Office

Northern Ireland is set to be hit with thunderstorms over the weekend.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning, which comes into place from midday on Saturday, August 21 until 10pm.

Areas including Belfast, Armagh and Newry are set to be affected by the thunderstorms.

The forecaster said: "Many places missing the worst, but heavy showers and thunderstorms may cause some transport disruption and perhaps flooding."

What to expect

  • There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus
  • Delays to train services are possible
  • Some short term loss of power and other services is possible, with possible damage due to lightning strikes
  • Flooding of a few homes and businesses could occur.

For Friday, the Met Office added: "The rain lasting on and off for the rest of the day with some heavier bursts. Feeling rather humid, but windy along North Channel coasts. Maximum temperature 20C."

There will be occasionally heavy rain in the evening, "but drier weather will extend from the west reaching the east coast by midnight," with winds then easing. Clear spells and patchy mist are expected overnight with a minimum temperature of 12C.

It will be a dry and bright morning on Saturday with some sunshine, with scattered heavy showers developing in the afternoon along with some thundery downpours and a maximum temperature of 22C.
