Northern Ireland weather warning for snow and ice issued as cold snap hits

Northern Ireland is set for a cold snap this week as forecasters have issued a weather warning for snow and ice.

The Met Office have issued a yellow alert for snow and ice which comes in to force on Monday, February 8 at 5pm and remains in place until 11am on Tuesday, February 9.

The forecasters say we can expect: "Snow showers and icy stretches over parts of Northern Ireland leading to some travel disruption."

The cold snap will start to take affect from tonight with forecasters predicting a 'cold night with a frost' as temperatures drop to -1.

Meanwhile the outlook for the rest of the week states: "Bitterly cold easterly winds with a lot of dry weather and sunshine. There will be a few light snow showers, mainly in the east."

Elsewhere in the UK, Storm Darcy has officially been named as parts of England are battled by snow blizzards.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Paul Gundersen, said: “The UK is in for a notably cold and snowy period over the next week, with very cold air in place over the whole of the UK by Sunday.

"There will be strong easterly winds during this period which may lead to blizzard conditions and blowing and drifting of lying snow at times. Daytime temperatures will stay in low single figures for much of the country over coming days, with some places staying below freezing and the bitter winds will make it feel even colder."
