Northern Ireland weather warning as Storm Christoph descends

It is set to be a wet and miserable day as Storm Christoph descends on Northern Ireland.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for rain saying there is likely to be heavy showers throughout Tuesday, January 19. The Chief Meteorologist has said that over 100mm of rain could fall in some areas over the course of the next few days.

Forecasters have said that despite the heavy downpours brought on by the storm, there will be light winds and a maximum temperature of eight degrees.

The sun will rise at 8.33am and set at 4.36pm.

The Met Office said: "An overcast day with periods of rain affecting all, most persistent and heavy to the south of Lough Neagh. Winds light and variable in direction. Maximum temperature 8 °C."

Tonight will see more heavy rain and the prospect of snow in some areas. There will also be a drop in the temperature, going below freezing in places.

The Met Office said: "Remaining unsettled and cloudy with periods of rain and summit snow, heaviest across southern areas. Towards dawn outbreaks turning more showery in nature from the west. Minimum temperature -1 °C."

Some parts of the UK will see over 100mm of rain fall during the course of Storm Christoph, while some higher ares could see over 200mm.

Chief Meteorologist Dan Suri, said “Following a cold spell where the main hazard was snow, our focus now turns to notably heavy rain moving across the UK this week. Some locations could see over 100mm of rain falling through the course just a couple of days with up to 200mm possible over higher ground.

“As the system moves away into the North Sea Wednesday night and Thursday morning there will be strong winds along the east coast for a time. Meanwhile, colder air coming southwards into the weather system brings the risk of further snow on the back edge of this system. Temperatures will gradually fall across the UK through the end of the week and into the weekend bringing a return to widespread overnight frosts.”
