Northern Ireland weather warning as snowfall and ice to cause disruption

A yellow warning for snow and ice has been issued across Northern Ireland.

The Met Office issued the weather warning on Friday and it is in place from 4pm today, January 22, until 10.30am on Saturday.

It has been warned that up to 10cm of snow could fall in higher areas with 1-3cm of snow expected elsewhere.

The warning states the snow and ice could cause travel disruption tonight and early Saturday. There could be some icy patches on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths, increasing the likelihood of accidents and injuries.

Some roads and railways are likely to be affected by snowfall, with longer journey times by car as well as bus and train services.

A forecaster for the Met Office said: "Showers will continue at times across many areas, these largely of rain and sleet at low levels across southern England and southern Wales and near coasts but will be of sleet and snow elsewhere.

"These will bring a cover of snow in places. 1-3 cm could accumulate at low levels, mostly across Northern Ireland, Scotland and northern England but as much as 5-10 cm of additional snow may accumulate at higher levels of these areas.

"Clear skies between showers will also bring the threat of ice."
