Northern Ireland weather: Met Office issue weather warning for counties Antrim and Down

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for easterly parts of Northern Ireland, including Belfast.

Their forecasters predict that parts of Co Antrim and Co Down could be battered by gusts of up to 60mph or 70mph from 9pm on Wednesday until the early hours of Thursday.

A spokesperson said: "Winds are expected to strengthen for a time this evening and overnight.

"A swathe of stronger winds is expected to move southwards across parts of coastal Scotland and Northern Ireland and it is likely that some places may see gusts of 60 to 70 mph for a time. This may coincide with high tides leading to a greater potential for coastal impacts."

What to expect:

  • It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities affected by spray and/or large waves
  • Some short term loss of power and other services is possible
  • Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely

Northern Ireland Housing Executive has urged anyone that needs repairs to call 03448 920 901 or text 66644, starting with the word 'REPAIR' and including your address.

More help and advice is available from Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service: 028 9266 4221 or the Floodline call 0300 2000 100.
