Northern Ireland weather forecast: Heavy showers expected and thunderstorm warning in place

The past few weeks have seen changeable weather conditions sweep in across Northern Ireland, with moments of sunshine and heat yesterday giving way to a yellow warning for thunderstorms today.

A yellow thunderstorm warning will be in place today from 11am to 8pm which increases the potential for surface water flooding throughout the region.

Disruption to travel can also be expected throughout the day during this period.

However, it won't be cold with the weather in Belfast set to be in the low 20s during the day with lows of 16C expected by night.

Areas further west in Co Fermanagh and Co Tyrone may experience slightly warmer temperatures throughout the day.

According to the Met Office, today will start off with misty conditions with some hill and coastal fog.

The weather forecaster said we can then expect conditions to be "cloudy with showers, heavy at times with chance of thunder. Light winds. Maximum temperature 20C".

Friday is set to bring a continuation of the showers, with some longer outbreaks expected with highs of 20C. The weather is expected to remain the same on Saturday, with a "mainly dry and bright" day predicted for Sunday.
