Northern Ireland weather forecast as snow and ice warning remains in place

A yellow weather warning for snow and ice remains in place on Wednesday morning.

The Met Office issued the warning on Tuesday morning for parts of Northern Ireland and it will stay in place until midnight tonight.

Wednesday will get off to a frosty start especially in the south, the Met Office says, with some freezing fog in places and this could be slow to clear, but generally dry and bright with sunny spells, but cloudier in the north with scattered wintry showers.

Maximum temperatures of 4C are expected.

The Met Office says: "Snow and ice may bring some disruption from later on Tuesday and through Wednesday."

What to expect

  • Some roads likely to be affected with longer journey times
  • Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths
  • Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces

And for tonight, wintry showers will become "heavier and more prolonged" in the evening and spreading south, with some lying snow at low levels.

Drier later in night with a few clear spells and frosty. Minimum temperature -2C.

For Thursday, New Year's Eve, it will be "rather cold and frosty, but mainly dry and bright with some sunshine".

A Met Office spokesperson added: "Wintry showers near coasts and perhaps more prolonged wintry weather in evening. Fresher northeasterly winds. Maximum temperature 3C."
