Northern Ireland vs Slovakia: Joe Hart excited to watch Bailey Peacock-Farrell shine at international level

Joe Hart believes Bailey Peacock-Farrell's mental attitude will see him go a long way with club and country.

While Peacock-Farrell watched Hart and Nick Pope dominate the number one jersey at Burnley, the 24-year-old has never shown any sign of ring rust when stepping up to international level.

Hart says that despite competing for the same jersey at Turf Moor, he formed a special bond with his 24-year-old understudy.

"I have really enjoyed forming a relationship with him (Bailey), showing him what I believe is required as a top keeper. The focus, the mentality, the gym work," Hart told the BBC.

"And he has really bought into it. Instead of being a third choice and waiting for things to happen, he is making things happen.

"Obviously he couldn't wait for his Northern Ireland games. That was the carrot for maybe not being on the bench. He was training a lot, but me and Popey (Nick Pope) were probably the mainstays in the team.

"So keeping him focused was good and seeing the bigger picture. And I think you are seeing that, and he is reaping the benefits at international level.

"I think Burnley know he is more than ready when called upon."

Hart says he felt "partly responsible" for Peacock-Farrell's development at Burnley, given the lack of first-team football the Northern Ireland keeper was having to contend with.

"I like Bailey's attitude and appetite, and I felt partly responsible that I was at Burnley and in a role he would maybe have benefited from," Hart added.

"But at the end of the day it is a professional dogfight and I was never going to give that role up."

He added: "There were times when I was trying to move on but didn't, and Bailey was coming in probably thinking he was going to have the role I was taking.

"So I wanted to give back as much as I could by keeping him focused and help him, and put him on the right track for what happens next."

And Hart says he has been impressed by Peacock-Farrell's performances for Northern Ireland, who stand on the cusp of reaching the Euro finals.

Speaking ahead of Thursday's play-off final against Slovakia, Hart said: "I know how excited he is to represent Northern Ireland, the game time, and the potential carrot of being at the Euros.

"When your game time is limited you really build up to those moments when you do get minutes. I know that feeling.

"Goalkeeping is a position you can't go chasing and make a statement like a striker can. You have to wait and see what happens, and I have been very impressed by Bailey waiting for those moments."
