Republic of Ireland boss Mick McCarthy would love to be a part of any Euro playoff with Northern Ireland

Republic of Ireland boss Mick McCarthy says he would love to be part of any winner-takes-all showdown with Northern Ireland.

Both remain on course for a massive Euro 2020 playoff final, which would be held at Windsor Park in Belfast.

Before any all-island showdown can happen Northern Ireland have to beat Bosnia & Herzegovina, and the Republic of Ireland have to see off Slovakia.

Both nations will be on their travels for their respective semi-finals on March 26.

And if they prevail they will head to Belfast for the final on March 31 .

Asked if it would be the biggest game in the two associations' histories, McCarthy said: "Without doubt. I can't think of another one that would have been bigger.

"Let's hope we can get it on."

The two footballing nations have played each other 11 times, with Northern Ireland winning two, the Republic four with five draws.

Their last meeting in Belfast was way back in November 1994 when the Republic claimed a 4-0 win in a European qualifier.

McCarthy said it would be "fabulous" if the two countries could battle it out for a spot at next year's Euros.

"It would be great to be involved in a game like that, and for the players to play in it," he added.

"I'm sure both the lads from Northern Ireland and us in the Republic want to play in that game and one of us going to the Euros.

"Hopefully it is us going to the Euros because some of the games are in Dublin."
