Northern Ireland vs Luxembourg: Rachel Furness taking fresh approach to World Cup qualifiers

Rachel Furness insists Northern Ireland's Euro heroics are in the past as they prepare to kick-off a new qualifying campaign.

Kenny Shiels' side made history earlier this year by reaching their first-ever European Championship finals.

The tournament will be played next summer, but before that Northern Ireland's focus turns to the World Cup qualifiers which kicks off with Friday night's opener against Luxembourg at Inver Park (7pm).

"It is exciting to be heading into a new campaign," Liverpool midfielder Furness said.

"When we met up we had a discussion on day one about what we have to do.

"We realise we have zero points and we have to start from the beginning again.

"We had our plaudits for qualifying for the Euros, but what can we do in this campaign? Can we create more history and test ourselves against the best? That's the target.

"It is a fresh start for the squad. Everyone has to fight to get in the squad because we have such a competitive group now.

"It is a new campaign and a chance to impress and put ourselves out there as a country."

Furness is back in Northern Ireland's squad after recovering from a broken leg sustained in April's Euro play-off win over Ukraine.

She insists she is fighting fit once again following a summer of rehabilitation.

"When I did break my leg my main focus was to get as fit as I could again. I feel in a great place and it feels like being back home with my family," she added.

"Every injury is tough. You go from training with 20-30 teammates to working on your own.

"I probably did the injury at the right time. It was at the end of the season and we had qualified for the Euros.

"I used the off-season to get as fit as I could and get myself in a good place. It was tough, but I worked through it and I had good people around me, at club and country level."

Northern Ireland host Luxembourg on Friday before facing Latvia at Windsor Park next Tuesday night.

Furness insists it is imperative they hit the ground running in a group that also includes England, Austria and North Macedonia.

The nine group winners will automatically qualify for the finals, with the runners-up taking part in the play-offs in October 2022.

"At the start of any campaign you want to hit the ground running and start on a positive light," Furness added.

"We have two home games coming up but our only focus is Luxembourg on Friday night.

"We are doing everything we can on and off the pitch to make sure we get three points on Friday night."
