Northern Ireland vs Germany: Roy Carroll believes anything is possible in Euro 2020 qualifiers

Roy Carroll believes anything is possible for Northern Ireland as they prepare for their next Euro 2020 qualifying test.

The former goalkeeper was part of Michael O'Neill's squad that reached the 2016 European Championships in France.

Michael McGovern was O'Neill's number one keeper for the tournament, but Carroll was an influential presence in the changing room as Northern Ireland reached the knockout stages.

He won a total of 45 caps for his country and also played 72 games for Manchester United, earning a Premier League winners’ medal in 2002/03.

Northern Ireland sit top of Euro 2020 qualifying Group C following four wins from four.

They still have to play heavyweights Germany and Holland twice - two games that will determine their qualification hopes.

“Football’s a funny old game, you can never know what’s going to happen," Carroll told TheSportsman.com.

"We have Germany twice and Holland twice, but Michael’s (O’Neill) has got the players playing really well after Euro 2016.

“They were unlucky in the World Cup qualifiers campaign to not get through. The Germans are a really good team, but we’re hoping to get something out of the Dutch especially in the home game."

Carroll admits not many people would have predicted four years ago that Northern Ireland would reach the Euro finals in France.

But O'Neill's side defied the odds - and predictions - to reach the tournament after topping their qualifying group.

Could it be on the cards again?

“In 2015, if you had asked me whether Northern Ireland would have ever qualified for a major tournament, I would have said no," he added.

"However in 2016 we qualified for the European Championships in France after winning our qualification group.

“You never know in football.”
