Northern Ireland Under 21 Euro qualifying group draw confirmed

Northern Ireland have been grouped with Spain once again in the qualifying draw for the 2023 Under 21 European Championships.

The draw for the 2023 Euros was held on Thursday at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.

Also in the group are Russia, Slovakia, Lithuania and Malta.

Northern Ireland recorded a famous away win over Spain three years ago in a qualifier for the 2019 Euros.

Shayne Lavery and Liam Donnelly (penalty) were on target that night in Albacete.

In the home leg Spain exacted some revenge when they claimed a 5-3 win.

Spain are the top seeds in Qualifying Group C for the 2023 tournament, while Russia are second seeds. Both countries have qualified for this year’s U21 Euros.

As with the last campaign, the nine group winners and the best runner-up will progress directly to the 2023 finals, which will be staged in Georgia and Romania.

The remaining eight sides will compete in four play-offs to join them.

Group matches in the 2023 UEFA European Under-21 Championship will begin in March this year and be completed by June next year.
