Police are investigating two murders in Northern Ireland that are believed to be unrelated and to have occurred overnight on Friday.

A 25-year-old man has been arrested after a 52-year-old woman was found dead in the fishing village of Portavogie in County Down on Saturday. It is understood the woman is of Eastern European origin.

In a separate incident, the Police Service of Northern Ireland has started a murder inquiry into the death of a young man in west Belfast.

The man, who was in his 20s, was found with head wounds on the Twinbrook estate around 1am near houses.

Det Ch Insp Gareth Talbot said: “After examination by ambulance staff, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. A number of injuries were noted on the body and, as such, we are treating this death as murder.”

The Sinn Féin MLA Jennifer McCann said she was shocked to hear about the death, adding: “I have spoken to the local PSNI and they tell me they are treating it as a violent death.

“My thoughts and prayers are with this young man’s family at this time and I would appeal to anyone with information to bring it forward to the PSNI.”
