Northern Ireland travel traffic light system expected to go ahead

It is understood that a traffic light system similar to those used in England, Scotland and Wales, could be implemented in Northern Ireland.

The proposal, which would see the system come into effect from Monday, will be discussed by ministers at Thursday's coronavirus Executive meeting.

The BBC has reported that only a limited number of countries would be placed on Northern Ireland's "green list" for foreign travel.

What does each list mean?

  • Green list - The green list countries are places which don't require travellers to quarantine on their return home.
  • Amber list - People would be required to self isolate for 10 days on arrival into Northern Ireland.
  • Red list - Those returning from a country on the UK's red list must book a quarantine hotel and international travellers must provide evidence of a negative Covid-19 test result, provide journey and contact details and also isolate for 10 days.

It's believed health officials have recommended that Portugal be placed on the amber list.

Speaking ahead of the Executive meeting today, Deputy First Minister Michelle O'Neill said: "I am just on my way to the Executive where we are going to have a busy day discussing travel. Discussing the relaxations that are due to kick in on Monday and also the good news that if you're now between 25-29, you can get your vaccination."

This morning the Department of Health announced that the next age group could avail of the Covid-19 vaccines.

Anyone born between 01/05/91 and 31/07/96 can book an appointment at one of the Trust vaccination centres across Northern Ireland. Vaccine supplies remain limited and as a result there will be approximately 20,000 slots available weekly, therefore people awaiting their jab are asked to be patient.

Additional slots for the following weeks will be released every Thursday.
