Northern Ireland teens cap off debut season at Huddersfield with cup success

Two Northern Ireland teenagers have capped off their debut season with Huddersfield Town with a trophy.

Brodie Spencer and Conor Falls joined the Terriers last summer from Cliftonville and Glentoran respectively.

Since then they have matured through the ranks at Huddersfield, featuring for the Championship club's underage levels.

The final game of their season was Tuesday night's Clarets Cup final against Burnley at the John Smith's Stadium.

Benjamin James' 69th-minute penalty was the difference on the night, with the spot-kick being won by Cookstown 17-year-old Falls.

Spencer - who turns 17 on Thursday - told Belfast Live: "It is a brilliant way to finish the season. To cap it off with a trophy is fantastic.

"We beat Blackburn in the semi-finals and then Burnley in the final. Conor came off the bench and won the penalty which helped us win the game and the lads are just buzzing."

There was another Northern Ireland player on the pitch on Tuesday night, with Dane McCullough featuring for beaten finalists Burnley.

"I know Dane well and it is unfortunate for him to finish on the losing team, but it is great for three Northern Ireland players to be involved in the final," Spencer added.

"We are just delighted to finish the season with a trophy.

"It was a strange season with everything surrounding Covid, but I absolutely loved the whole experience. I can't wait for next season to come around now.

"I go home tomorrow for the summer but I will keep working hard and learning. This season was brilliant, and it is all about building again next season and beyond."
