Northern Ireland teen Sean McAllister the hero for Everton in EFL Trophy win

Northern Ireland youngster Sean McAllister was the hero for Everton Under 21s as they kicked off their EFL Trophy campaign with a win on Tuesday night.

McAllister came off the bench to score the winning goal in the 64th minute as the young Toffees beat Morecambe 1-0 at the Mazuma Stadium.

There were two familiar faces on the opposing team.

Northern Ireland defender Ryan McLaughlin came into the Morecambe side just days after signing for the Shrimps, while international midfielder Alfie McCalmont also started.

McCalmont - who was involved in Ian Baracough's recent squad for the games against Lithuania, Estonia and Switzerland - joined Morecambe on loan from Leeds United in the summer.

McAllister, 18, is highly rated by both Everton and Northern Ireland.

He recently captained Gerard Lyttle's Under 19 side in the first of two friendly wins over the Faroe Islands.

McAllister joined Everton from Dungannon Swifts in the summer of 2019 and signed a two-year professional contract with the Premier League club the following year.

He has previously captained Everton's Under 18 side.
