Northern Ireland snow and ice warning issued by Met Office

Frosty conditions are set to continue across Northern Ireland with another weather warning in place.

The Met Office issued a yellow alert on Wednesday morning, which is set to be in place from midday today through to lunch time tomorrow, Thursday January 19.

Wintry showers will be bringing further disruption from ice and snow across the region, with roads likely to be affected.

A spokesperson from the Met Office said: "Some roads and railways affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services. Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces. Icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths."

Some schools were shut today after freezing temperatures overnight.

Trafficwatch NI said: "Information from road sensors are reporting road surface temperatures below freezing in all areas at present.

The Met Office added: "Showers will affect the warning area, these falling as a mix of rain and hail near coasts, and sleet and snow inland at times, mainly overnight. This will lead to some temporary snow accumulations at low levels, whilst higher ground of Northern Ireland could see a further 2-5 cm of snow. For most parts of the warning area, however, ice will be the main hazard."
