Northern Ireland set for historic friendly against USA

Northern Ireland will make history next month when they play the USA for the first time.

It has been announced that Ian Baraclough’s side will host The Stars and Stripes in a friendly on Sunday, March 28 (6pm kick-off) at the National Football Stadium at Windsor Park.

The game will be played in between two World Cup qualifiers.

Northern Ireland take on top seeds Italy in Parma on Thursday, March 25, while their second qualifier is against Bulgaria in Belfast on Wednesday, March 31.

The Americans will be using the game as a warm-up for several competitive matches later this year, beginning with the Concacaf (Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football) Nations League finals in June, the Concacaf Gold Cup the following month and FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifiers in the autumn.

Last week USA - whose squad includes Chelsea forward Christian Pulisic - defeated Trinidad and Tobago 7-0 in a friendly in Florida and in December they secured a 6-0 win in a friendly against El Salvador.
