As pressure mounted on our Education Minister to provide clarity around schools reopening next week, an announcement was made on Thursday.
It was made just hours before the Stormont assembly was set to be recalled to discuss next week's plans amid concerns over surging coronavirus case numbers.
Minister Weir said decisions were "not made lightly" and that it is "critical we all must consider the public health and scientific advice".
Deputy First Minister Michelle O'Neill said: "Minister Weir must use this time to ramp up contingency planning and prepare for every eventuality Protecting students, families and staff must be priority."
When will primary school pupils return?
Primary school pupils will be taught remotely until January 11, after which they will attend school for face to face teaching.
When will post-primary pupils return?
Post-primary pupils will be taught remotely during the first week of January. From Monday January 11 pupils in years 8 to 11 will continue to be taught remotely until the end of January while pupils in years 12 to 14 will attend school for face-to-face teaching.
What are the plans for childcare settings?
Minister Weir announced that childcare settings including those attached to schools, pre-school facilities, nurseries and special schools to be open as usual.
Are January exams going ahead?
Yes. The Minister says exams due to take place in January will be facilitated compliant with public health guidance and schools will have flexibility to deliver face-to-face teaching to pupils due to sit those exams, should they wish to do so.
Children of key workers - will they be supported?
Yes. Schools will accommodate vulnerable children and the children of key workers from the start of term.
The Education Minister will make a statement in the Assembly on Thursday morning following the announcement.
