Northern Ireland's first ever same-sex marriage couple are 'living the dream'

A couple who tied the knot today in Northern Ireland's first same-sex marriage said they are "living the dream".

Robyn Peoples, 26, and Sharni Edwards, 27, made .

The country made same-sex marriages legal last month after years of campaigning.

Sharni Edwards-Peoples, a waitress originally from Brighton, East Sussex, said: "We are literally living the dream, it's incredible.

"Today is our six-year anniversary so we wanted to go ahead with a civil partnership but when the bill was passed it was perfect timing and it was a complete coincidence, a happy coincidence, we couldn't be more grateful.

"We didn't expect to be the first couple, it's coincidental."

The Edwards-Peoples, who both wore white bridal gowns at the civil marriage ceremony, said it was "surreal" to make headlines around the world.

Robyn Edwards-Peoples, who is a senior care worker from Belfast, Northern Ireland, added: "We fought so long and hard for this opportunity to be seen as equal and now we are here and it's just amazing."

"It's just to show that we are equal to a man and a woman, our love is just the same, it's no different.

"Sometimes people might try to say it's not. Our love is the exact same, and this means everything to us.

"Now we are married and we have this opportunity - this is my wife, I can finally say she is my wife and we have had our marriage."

The politicians stepped in and acted on the controversial issue after lengthy campaigning.

Speaking at the hotel, Robyn Edwards-Peoples continued: "We just want to say thank you to everyone, everyone who has marched and signed petitions, everyone who has helped us get to this stage, we just want to say thank you."
