Northern Ireland's Euro 2020 playoff set to happen in October

Northern Ireland's Euro 2020 playoff against Bosnia-Herzegovina could take place in October.

The game was originally scheduled for March and then June, but was then postponed indefinitely due to the coronvirus pandemic earlier this month.

With the Euro finals now set for the summer of 2021, the 16-nation playoffs have been placed on ice for the foreseeable future.

UEFA vice president Sndor Csnyi believes the games could be played in October or November.

All 55 UEFA member countries are currently scheduled to play Nations League games during those months, but they could now be moved forward.

Football Association of Ireland interim CEO Gary Owens was involved in conference calls with UEFA bosses today.

He said the Republic of Ireland's Euro playoff against Slovakia is expected to take place in October, with the winners advancing to play either Northern Ireland or Bosnia in the final the following month.

“Originally, we thought it may well be November but it now looks like the semi-final is the preferred option in October," Owens said.

“They don’t want to have the semi-final and the final of the play-offs in the one month.

“It looks like the Nations League matches will be in September and October with the semi-final play-off in October and the final play-off in November.”
