Northern Ireland restrictions to be lifted in some hospitality settings

Northern Ireland's ministers have agreed to ease some coronavirus restrictions.

During a meeting at Stormont on Thursday, ministers decided to lift rules on hospitality, affecting table service and vaccine passports.

From Friday, January 21, the rule that only six could sit at a table, and table service only, will be scrapped.

The cap on the number of households meeting inside domestic settings will be removed from the same date.

And from next Wednesday, January 26, nightclubs are due to reopen and vaccine passports will not be required in hospitality but will still be needed for nightclubs.

The requirement to provide proof of exemption from wearing face coverings will also be removed from Friday, and the guidance on working from home will revert to working from home where you can.

Patrons wishing to access nightclubs, pubs, restaurants and other licensed premises have been required to provide proof of vaccination or a negative lateral flow test result or evidence of a previous Covid-19 infection.

The same rules have applied for entry to large indoor and outdoor events, such as concerts and sporting events.

Remaining Covid measures will be reviewed at the executive meeting on February 10.

Meanwhile, a further two people who previously tested positive for Covid-19 in Northern Ireland have died, the Department of Health said.

Another 3,879 confirmed cases of the virus were also recorded in the latest 24-hour reporting period.

On Thursday morning, there were 402 Covid-positive patients in hospital, with 24 in intensive care.
