Northern Ireland restrictions: Executive 'agree amendment' to rules on masks in nightclubs

The Northern Ireland Executive has agreed to make amendments to restrictions on nightclubs, it's been reported.

With nightclubs expected to open in just one week, October 31, confusion surfaced as to whether the rules on wearing masks indoors would mean wearing masks on the dancefloor.

The BBC reports that Stormont has today agreed people "won’t need to wear a face covering while dancing" when nightclubs reopen on Halloween night.

An amendment will be made to existing coronavirus regulations.

Meanwhile, Michelle O’Neill has said that the planned easing of coronavirus restrictions in Northern Ireland on October 31 remains on course.

The deputy First Minister said ministers remained committed to steps that include the reopening of nightclubs and the removal of social distancing rules for bars and restaurants.

Ms O’Neill said ministers were not considering stepping back from the planned relaxations.

“As I stand here today, no that’s not the intention. Our intention is to proceed as we have planned on the 31st of October,” she said.

“However, as we’ve always done throughout the pandemic, when we make an easement or lift some of the restrictions it takes a number of weeks to understand the impact of that."
