Northern Ireland records hottest day ever

Northern Ireland has been basking in the heat - and we could have a new record on our hands.

The Met Office said Saturday is provisionally the hottest day ever recorded in Northern Ireland, with the mercury reaching 31.2C in Ballywatticock in Co Down.

A tweet said: “Today is provisionally the hottest day ever recorded in Northern Ireland.

“Ballywatticock in County Down reached 31.2C at 15.40.

“Previously, 30.8C was the highest temperature recorded in Northern Ireland, reached on July 12 1983 and June 30 1976.”

Thousands flocked to beaches across NI with a scorching weekend forecast.

Translink suspended ticket sales due to high passenger numbers in Helen's Bay and they also warned that trains generally had to operate at a reduced speed due to high track temperatures.

The good weather is set to continue on Sunday with temperatures well into the 20s.

The Met Office said: "The low cloud and mist generally clearing fairly quickly during the morning, but could linger for a time around the north coast. Otherwise bright with sunny spells. Maximum temperature 25C."
