Northern Ireland provisionally beats hottest day record for third time in a week

Northern Ireland may have beaten the highest temperature on record again during this heatwave.

The Met Office say the mercury hit 31.4 °C at 3.40pm this afternoon in Armagh.

This provisional record beats the previous high temperatures set at 31.2 °C in Ballywatticock on Saturday and the 31.3 °C recorded in Castlederg on Wednesday.

A Met Office spokesperson described it as the "hottest day ever recorded in Northern Ireland".

It comes as the amber warning for extreme heat continues until Friday.

The forecast predicts a "very warm evening with plenty of late sunshine will lead to a dry night with some clear spells. It will be very mild or even warm once again overnight. Minimum temperature 17 °C".

They said Friday with be "another hot day", adding: "Once again largely sunny and dry, but a few isolated heavy showers could break out in the west in the afternoon. Maximum temperature 30 °C."
