Northern Ireland Prison Service confirms first female Covid-19 case

The Northern Ireland Prison Service has confirmed the first positive case of Covid-19 in the female prisoner population.

A spokesperson said the female prisoner is in their care at Hydebank and tested positive for Covid-19 in the last number of days.

"She is being cared for by our staff and colleagues from the South Eastern Trust and her family has been informed," they added.

“This is the first positive test of a female prisoner in Northern Ireland and only the third prisoner who wasn’t a new committal to test positive since the outbreak of the pandemic.

“The Prison Service will continue to take all necessary steps to ensure the safety of everyone in our prisons during these challenging times.”

Meanwhile, the Department of Health reported a further nine Covid-19 related deaths on Saturday.

The death figures in Northern Ireland now stand at 1,443 as of this morning.

And Saturday's dashboard also reported that 1,442 individuals tested positive for the virus over the last 24 hours.
