Northern Ireland principal records heartwarming message to school children

A Northern Ireland principal has recorded an incredibly moving video message for the children in his school.

Mr McMahon, from St Joseph's Primary School in Lisburn, posted the video online and it has now been viewed over 14,000 times.

As schools remain closed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, families are embarking on their homeschooling journey once again.

And Mr McMahon has vowed to keep in touch with the St Joseph's family over the next few weeks.

He said: "Good afternoon boys and girls. It is Friday afternoon here in St Joseph's and it is very, very quiet. Not the way I like it. I like to hear all your laughter and see your smiles and all the games you are playing and all the learning that you are doing.

"So it is a little bit different for us, and it is a little bit different for you. But I know that you are more than fit for this challenge. I know your mums and dads are more than fit for this challenge. And I know that your teachers and classroom assistants are going to be so, so helpful along the way.

"Now, it is January and in January we are supposed to give up our old habits and start new resolutions and things like that. In my house we were going to cut out some of the treats and things but I think that after the week that we have had and the news that we have had I think everyone deserves a wee treat.

"I think I'll go home and make some hot chocolate and marshmallows. And I think that you should maybe ask mummy and daddy for a wee treat this weekend too, and maybe mummy and daddy deserve a wee treat.

"I will touch base with you next week for maybe a little longer, maybe from somewhere else in the school. Maybe we'll get to meet some of your other teachers when I am out and about."

Mr McMahon ended his video greeting with a huge thumbs up to all the school children, their parents, teachers and classroom assistants.

And he left a poignant message for those at home to enjoy the time with family.

He added: "In the meantime I just want to say have a lovely weekend everyone. Get outside. It is cold but it is lovely and crisp and healthy. Get out on your bikes, get out and kick a football around. Enjoy spending this wee bit of time with family.

"We are all thinking of you here and can't wait to see you back but I will be checking you out on SeeSaw and Google Classrooms and can't wait to see the work that you are all producing. Have a good weekend."
