Northern Ireland postcodes recording the highest number of new coronavirus cases in past week

The Department of Health has recorded over 12,000 positive cases of coronavirus in the past week.

From November 29 - December 5, 12,876 new positive cases have been recorded.

And 24 postcodes throughout Northern Ireland have recorded more than 200 cases of the virus this week.

The 10 worst hit postcodes are:

  • BT34 - Warrenpoint, Rathfriland and Kilkeel - 652
  • BT35 - Newry - 442
  • BT23 - Newtownards/Comber/Ballygowan - 412
  • BT41 - Antrim/Randalstown - 385
  • BT48 - Derry - 365
  • BT38 - Carrickfergus - 348
  • BT28 - Ballinderry/Stonyford - 347
  • BT47 - Derry/Dungiven - 337
  • BT45 - Magherafelt - 334
  • BT36 - Newtownabbey - 308

Meanwhile, a number of changes to international travel to and from Northern Ireland have been announced to help slow the Omicron variant.

As of 4am on Tuesday, December 7, anyone arriving into Northern Ireland from abroad will be required to take a pre-departure Covid test.

According to the Department of Health, this applies to all travellers aged 12 years old and over, including those who are fully vaccinated.

Health officials say it is a temporary measure and will be reviewed prior to December 20.

International travellers will have to provide a negative pre-departure PCR or LFD test taken 48 hours before travelling, in addition to a negative PCR test on or before day two after arrival.

Nigeria has also been added to the red list for international travel from 4am on Monday December 6, meaning all travellers returning to Northern Ireland from Nigeria will be required to enter hotel quarantine upon arrival and isolate for 10 days.
