Northern Ireland midfielder Rachel Furness 'can't wait to get started' after agreeing Liverpool move

Northern Ireland midfielder Rachel Furness is eager to “hit the ground running” after agreeing a move to Liverpool Women.

Furness, who has scored 17 goals in 67 appearances for her country, joins the Reds after spending the past three years with Reading.

The 31-year-old, who has spent the last few months on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, will wear the No27 shirt when she makes her debut next month.

Liverpool, who lie second bottom of the FA Women’s Super League, travel to face Brighton and Hove Albion in their next fixture on January 5.

“I can’t wait to get started and I just want to hit the ground running and bounce into that first game on January 5,” said Furness.

“There’s such a talented squad here and I’m really excited to have signed for Liverpool. It’s such a massive club and I can’t wait to get going.

“The league position at the moment isn’t what they’d like but I can see the talent in the squad and I’m hoping to add to that and help the Reds move up the table.”

As well as playing for Reading and Spurs, Furness spent two stints with hometown club Sunderland and also enjoyed spells with Newcastle and Icelandic team Grindavik.

Liverpool manager Vicky Jepson said: “This is a player who we’ve been keen on for quite a while and I’m delighted to welcome her to the club.

“The second half of this season is going to be a very important one for us and her experience and leadership qualities in the middle of the park will be valuable assets.”

Furness, who qualifies to play for Northern Ireland through her mother, made her international debut against Sweden in 2005.
