Northern Ireland lockdown restrictions: NI Executive outlines rules surrounding hugging loved ones

The NI Executive signalled a further set of relaxations on Thursday which will come into place from May 24.

These are subject to view on May 20, including the reopening of indoor bars and restaurants.

But one topic outlined by Stormont Ministers important to those who have missed their loved ones was rules surrounding hugging family and friends.

The public are asked if hugging, to think about the particular scenario but it is not permitted in hospitality or retail settings.

The Executive said: "Finally, we are also conscious that people want to see their family and friends again in less restricted circumstances.

"While there is an ongoing need to be cautious and careful, and to think about individual circumstances and scenarios, the Executive sees benefit in people being able to hug their loved ones.

"However, physical contact with others will always be associated with risk of transmitting the virus, and that risk will be greater when one or more of those involved has not been vaccinated.

"The rules on social distancing in hospitality and retail are not changing at this time and hugging is not permitted in those environments."

Prior to discussions on hugging on Thursday, First Minister Arlene Foster said: “We know that there is a lot of people who have been waiting for that time, I know certainly I have in terms of my own mother, so I am looking forward to being able to have those discussions tomorrow.”
