Northern Ireland lockdown restrictions: Executive announces dates for outdoor sport to return

Outdoor team sports are set to return from next Friday, April 23.

The Northern Ireland Executive announced dates for the easing of some lockdown restrictions on Thursday.

First Minister Arlene Foster highlighted how restrictions will be eased moving forward.

From April 23 competitive outdoor sport can return, with participant numbers not exceeding 100 and no spectators permitted.

Outdoor sport organised by a club, individual or individuals affiliated will be extended to include squad training.

From April 30, individual activities in gyms, swimming pools and other large venues are permitted – including with a carer and to allow 1-2-1 training/coaching with social distancing.

There was also an indicator date of May 24 for the return of indoor group exercise and training in numbers limited to suit the venue.

The First Minister said: “This is a landmark day for Northern Ireland as we step firmly and with confidence on our pathway to recovery.

“I am pleased and proud that through our collective efforts we have reached a point where we have established a good level of control over the virus.

“We are now entering brighter and better times.

“This balanced package of relaxations will restore those familiar aspects of everyday life that have been missed dearly.

“I urge everyone to stay with us and keep following the health advice so that we can continue with our plans to more fully open up our society over coming weeks.”

The move follows the easing of other sporting restrictions earlier this month.

From April 1, 10 people from two households have been permitted to undertake outdoor sporting activities as defined in the regulations. This allowed sports such as golf and tennis to resume in small groups of individuals from two households.

Structured outdoor sport training for up to 15 people (including coaches) was then allowed to resume on April 12. This was for clubs and individuals affiliated to recognised sports governing bodies.

Before that only 'elite' sports were allowed to continue during lockdown. This included the Danske Bank Premiership and international football, and Ulster Rugby.
