Northern Ireland forward Paul Smyth signs loan deal with Charlton Athletic

Northern Ireland international Paul Smyth has joined League One side Charlton Athletic on loan for the rest of the season.

The QPR forward played in the division last season, helping Wycombe Wanderers earn promotion to the Championship in the playoff final.

During his loan spell at Wycombe Smyth scored once in 19 games.

This season he made four substitute appearances for Mark Warburton's QPR including three in the Championship and one in a 3-2 Carabao Cup defeat to Plymouth Argyle.

The Rs also have taken up an option to recall Smyth in January.

On signing for Charlton, former Linfield player Smyth said: "It feels great to be a part of the club.

"I spoke with the Manager and spoke with Steve Gallen as well.

"I want to develop as a player and Lee Bowyer said he can help me with that, I had a phone call with him yesterday and I thought ‘let’s do it, let’s get it done'.

“With Wycombe, we got promoted, it was a crazy season but getting there and getting promotion, it is something I want to achieve again.”

Charlton manager Lee Bowyer added: "I think we’ve tried to get him in the last three transfer windows.

"He’s quick and full of energy and fits well with the type of football we like to play.”

Charlton currently sit 17th in League One with four points from their opening four games and are set to host Wigan Athletic on Saturday.
