Northern Ireland firefighters attacked as they tackle burning tyres near bonfire site

Firefighters were attacked with missiles when they went to tackle burning tyres near a bonfire site.

The incident occurred at around 8pm on Sunday night at Lanark Way in West Belfast .

It is understood residents rang the Fire Service after tyres were set alight.

A spokesman for the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service said they were called to the incident at 7.49pm "as tyres were on fire near the bonfire site in Lanark Way".

They said a fire appliance was dispatched and that youths were seen in the area.

The spokesman added: "The fire wasn’t put out as youths attacked the the appliance with stones.

"The crew returned to the station, however there were no injuries to the crew or damage to appliance."
