Northern Ireland Fire Service attacked with fireworks in two separate incidents on Halloween night

The fire service has reported a 22% increase on emergency calls and responses in 2020 on Halloween night - despite Northern Ireland’s ongoing circuit breaker.

In two incidents, the fire service encountered “hostile” members of the public who threw missiles including fireworks.

Between 6am on October 31 and 1am on November 1, there were 83 emergency calls and crews responded to 62 operational incidents.

They said that 18 were bonfire or ‘Halloween related’.

A Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) spokesperson said: “Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service has been responding to calls associated with Halloween night celebrations with the situation remaining relatively quiet.

“Between 6pm on the October 31 and 1am on November 1, NIFRS Regional Control Centre received 83 emergency calls and Fire Crews have responded to 62 operational incidents. This equates to a 22% increase for the same period in 2019. 18 of these incidents were bonfire/ Halloween related.

“Crews attended two separate incidents where they encountered hostile members of the public throwing missiles, including fireworks. There were no injuries to crews, however at one of these incidents crews withdrew for safety reasons.”
