Northern Ireland Executive confirms coronavirus lockdown restriction changes for May 24

The Northern Ireland Executive has confirmed the relaxing of restrictions next week following a meeting today, it is understood.

Stormont Ministers met on Thursday to review the easing of the Covid-19 measures that are currently in place, as some restrictions are due to be lifted on Monday, May 24.

The decision will see indoor hospitality, hotels and indoor attractions reopen, along with wedding receptions being allowed to take place and six people from two households will be able to meet indoors.

It will be the first time since before Christmas that indoor hospitality venues have been able to open.

Spectators will also be allowed to return to sporting events with a 500 person cap, indoor group exercise can restart and people will now be able to visit their GPs.

Travel restrictions for Northern Ireland have also been ratified by the Executive, with certain countries being placed in a green, amber and red list.

The meeting could have seen ministers put a pause on the relaxing of lockdown restrictions if the number of new cases was at too high a level.

There had also been worries that the emergance of the Indian variant could lead to restrictions remaining in place longer than originally intended.
