Northern Ireland emergency departments under "extreme pressure" as patients told to come only in cases of medical emergency

Five of Northern Ireland's HSC Trusts have made an appeal to the public to avoid coming into their emergency departments unless it is a medical emergency.

It comes after services across the country faced "extreme pressure" during the bank holiday weekend.

The Belfast Trust has said that waiting times for cases that are not urgent at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children are long and reminded the public that children should only be accompanied by one parent and asked them to consider other options.

In a tweet, the Trust said: "ED at the Children's Hospital is extremely busy. There may be a wait for anyone not in urgent need.

"Please be patient with our staff at this time. Children should be accompanied by one adult only. Please consider using alternative services".

It comes after the Western Trust posted that both emergency departments at the South West Acute Hospital and Altnagelvin Hospital were "very busy".

They explained that there were currently 47 people waiting in the ED of the SWAH with 21 people waiting to be admitted to hospital and that there were currently over 60 people in Altnagelvin's emergency department with a further 24 people waiting to be admitted.

The Northern Trust apologise for delays at both the Antrim Area Hospital and the Causeway Hospital as there are "a considerable number of people" waiting for beds.

The South Eastern Trust also took to social media to ask the public to avoid coming if their condition is not classed as urgent.

They penned: "The Ulster Hospital Emergency Department is under EXTREME pressure today.

"If your condition isn't urgent, PLEASE consider other options of care #HelpUsHelpYou".

Craigavon emergency department has stated that they have already had a busy morning and that it is also expecting an increase of numbers this evening due to the bank holiday.

The Southern Trust tweeted: "Craigavon ED is already v. bust this am & will get even busier later this BH Monday.

"Expect EXTREMELY long waiting times as Covid-19 continues to impact on bed pressures.

"Staff continue to work v. hard to see everyone. You can call (GP) Out of Hours for serious urgent problems".
