Northern Ireland defender Tom Flanagan receives PFA Community Champion Award

Northern Ireland international Tom Flanagan has been awarded the PFA Community Champion Award.

The Sunderland defender has received the gong for his ongoing support for the club’s official charity, the Foundation of Light.

Flanagan has supported a variety of education, health and sports projects, and took part in school, hospital and hospice visits.

The PFA Community Champion Award aims to raise awareness of the great support that PFA members provide to their club’s community activities during the season.

Jamie Wright, Foundation of Light’s Managing Director praised Flanagan’s support, saying: “Without a doubt Tom has been this season’s Community Champion.

"He has spent a lot of time with us and gotten involved in a number of our projects, taking time to talk and chat to both younger and older members of our community.

“As the official charity of Sunderland AFC, the players play an important role in our work, helping to inspire children, young people and families across Sunderland, South Tyneside and Durham.

"When they attend projects, they are making incredible memories for those who they meet.

“We would like to thank Tom for his support and the time he has put aside to help us. We look forward to seeing him back again next season.”

Flanagan played 18 times for the Black Cats this season before the campaign was curtailed.

He has won five caps for Northern Ireland since making his debut in a 1-0 win over New Zealand in June 2017.
