Northern Ireland couple run a marathon in their home dressed as Big Bird and Elmo

A Co Derry couple have raised more than £2,500 for their chosen charities - all while running a marathon from their homes as Big Bird and Elmo.

Adam and Laura Jayne McNeill were both set to run the London Marathon but were both forced to end that quest amid the Coronavirus pandemic.

Adam, 30 and Laura Jayne, 26, had trained over December, January and February for the challenege.

But with London postponed until October 2020, the pair decided that they would run the North Coast Marathon, but that too had to be shelved when the restrictions here were tightened.

Unwilling to let their good work go to waste, the pair decided that they would run the 26-mile marathon in their very own home - on a treadmill!

Speaking to Belfast Live, Laura Jayne, who is originally from Bangor but now lives in Coleraine, explained how the "strenuous" challenge was worth it in the end.

She said: "It was very hot running the marathon in the garage. We both ran about 13 miles each in about three hours and fifty minutes.

"We wanted people to get involved and tune in an watch us on Facebook, so to make it slightly more difficult for ourselves we decided that we would do it dressed as Elmo and Big Bird.

"It was hilarious, difficult and excruciating all at the same time. When you are stopping and starting on the run, it can be hard to then motivate yourself to go again, but I am glad that we did."

She added: "We raised over £2,000 for Friends of the Cancer Centre and Coleraine Gateway Club.

"Both of those causes our quiet close to our hearts as my dad just finished radiotherapy and Adam's mother volunteers to help those with disabilites.

"I am delighted that we decided to do and I want to thank everyone who tuned in to watch us and donated money for our charities, you don't know how much it means."
