Northern Ireland coronavirus restrictions extended as sport suffers further blow

It has been announced that Northern Ireland's current  coronavirus restrictions have been extended to March 5.

The four-week extension of the rules was confirmed by the NI Executive on Thursday.

The ongoing restrictions are set to be reviewed on February 18, with the potential for regulations to be extended to Easter.

Under current rules all indoor and outdoor sport is not permitted, other than at elite level.

The Danske Bank Premiership, Women’s Premiership and Ulster Rugby have been able to play on with elite status.

Top flight football here returns this weekend following a two-week circuit breaker.

NI Football League and Irish FA have also introduced Covid testing ahead of this weekend's games, which is due to begin today.

The ongoing restrictions have placed further doubt on many non-elite competitions completing, or even starting, their seasons.

The NIFL Championship and Premier Intermediate League both remain in limbo, with Ards chairman Warren Patton last week calling for the Championship season to be voided.

Other sports have been severely impacted including amateur boxing, GAA and golf.

Many sporting events have already been cancelled already in 2021, including the North West 200 international road race and Circuit of Ireland Rally.

Both cancellations were confirmed by organisers on Wednesday.
