Northern Ireland coronavirus lockdown 'could be extended until April'

Northern Ireland's current lockdown restrictions could be extended until early April under proposals from the Health Minister, it has been reported.

Strict measures have been in place since Boxing Day in a bid to curb the spread of coronavirus infections.

Restrictions are currently in place until March 5, with ministers meeting today to review the plans.

Health Minister Robin Swann is reported to have recommended extending lockdown restrictions until early April, with a review on March 18.

The Stormont executive is also expected to discuss having a phased return of schools from March 8.

It is believed this could initially involve primary years 1-3 or pupils in exam years.

Health officials are keen to avoid a rise in Covid-19 cases around the St Patrick's Day and Easter holidays.

Any future relaxations of restrictions are expected to be gradual in a bid to avoid infection rates becoming unmanageable.

The power-sharing Executive is expected to give an update on its decisions following today's meeting.
