Northern Ireland Christmas Day weather forecast for a chilly and sometimes wet Friday

Christmas Day has arrived, and while it's not the wonderful time of the year many were hoping for, at least it's not raining - yet.

The majority of the country will be dry throughout December 25, with a few patchy spells of cloud.

But according to the Met Office, that cloud cover is expected to make way for dotted showers in the evening.

From 6pm, a band of rain will start making its way across Northern Ireland - the heaviest of which will be around Limavady and Coleraine.

By 9pm, the intermittent light downpours will have made their way to the west of the country, covering parts of Belfast and Holywood.

Around Omagh, between 2-4mm will fall around this time.

Temperatures throughout the night fell around -2C in areas, and it is expected to remain cold throughout the day - the mercury rising no higher than 8C across NI.

The temperature in Belfast will hover around 5C, 4C in Craigavon, and 5C in Ballymoney.

Northern Ireland's wait for a white Christmas goes on - making it more than 10 years since its last.

A Met Office forecaster said: "A mainly cloudy [Christmas Day] though some brighter intervals, and staying dry.

"Then some patchy rain developing in the evening. Maximum temperature 8C.

"Boxing Day very windy, with some heavy rain developing later. Wintry showers Sunday, frequent in west.

"Showers on Monday with northerly gales."

The weather is predicted to stay unsettled through to the end of December with a mixture of sunny spells and showers, but also some longer spells of rain.

Temperatures are expected to be below average with snow across the hills but also likely to lower levels at times, especially but not restricted to the north.

At times it will be windy with a risk of coastal gales, with central and eastern areas likely to witness more in the way of lighter winds, bringing the risk of fog.

Into early January there are signs that higher pressure may start to build from the southwest bringing more settled weather.
