Ards North Down centenarians are to receive a special treat from the local council to mark Northern Ireland’s 100th birthday this year.
The council is appealing to all residents born in 1921 to get in touch and receive special porcelain forget-me-not flowers for reaching their special milestone.
The council commissioned local artist Mags Donnan, owner of craft business "Snowdrops and Sentiments,” to design and create the porcelain flowers, with “100” embossed on each bloom. Historically, forget-me-nots symbolise remembrance and respect.
The Mayor of Ards and North Down Councillor Trevor Cummings will present each of the centenarians with the craft pieces, when restrictions allow.
He said: “We are delighted to recognise our borough’s centenarians as part of our NI100 programme of activities. These local people, all born in 1921, started their lives in the new Northern Ireland, and to have lived through the whole century is just remarkable.
“I am very much looking forward to meeting everyone when it is safe to do so, to present these unique tokens of our recognition. We have had a good response so far to the call-out, but would appeal to any other centenarians to please get in touch.”
