Northern Ireland breaks hottest day record for the second time in 5 days

As Northern Ireland continues to bask in the sunshine, a new record has provisionally been broken once again.

Just four days after Ballywatticock in Co Down took the title of hottest day with a record smashing 31.2 C on Saturday, July 17, it seems it's already been beaten.

At 2.37pm today, Wednesday, July 21, Castlederg in Co Tyrone recorded a temperature of 31.3 C - just slightly higher than the temperature on Saturday.

This means that July 21 is provisionally the hottest day on record in Northern Ireland.

Before Ballywatticock reached high temperatures on Saturday, 30.8C was the highest temperature recorded in Northern Ireland, reached on July 12, 1983 and June 30, 1976.

It comes as the Met Office have issued an amber weather warning which came into force on Wednesday, July 21 at 8am until midnight on Friday, July 23.

The forecaster said: "Temperatures both by day and night will increase this week leading to public health impacts."

NI Water has urged the public to urgently reduce water usage to avoid shortages.

Director of customer operations Des Nevin said if the current demand continues, it will lead to failures in the system and some customers will lose supply.
