Northern Ireland boss Ian Baraclough signs new two-year contract

Ian Baraclough believes Northern Ireland can "continue to grow" after rubber-stamping his new contract with the Irish FA.

Former Under 21 boss Baraclough has signed a two-year extension following a protracted talks process.

The IFA Board unanimously agreed to offer the 51-year-old a new deal back in October, while Baraclough intimated last month that he was close to putting pen-to-paper on fresh terms.

The new contract will see Baraclough remain at the helm for the new UEFA Nations League campaign and Euro 2024 qualifiers, and will be extended further if Northern Ireland reach the finals.

Baraclough initially signed an 18-month contract after taking over from Michael O’Neill in June last year, and has won five of his 20 games in charge including a penalty shootout win over Bosnia-Herzegovina in the Euro 2020 play-offs.

In the last World Cup qualifiers Northern Ireland finished third in Group C behind Switzerland and Italy.

Despite some disappointing results, Baraclough has helped develop a number of young players including Liverpool's Conor Bradley and Arsenal defender Dan Ballard.

Baraclough said: “I am really happy to have signed this contract. We have a great mix of youth and experience and, coupled with my backroom team, I feel we can continue to grow and develop as a group.

“I want to thank the Irish FA for backing me and the Northern Ireland fans for doing likewise. Those games behind closed doors during the height of the Covid pandemic, both home and away, were harder without them.

“Having them back in numbers puts a spring in everyone’s step and I want to acknowledge their support and I hope that more good times are on the horizon.”

Irish FA President Conrad Kirkwood added: “I’m excited about what Ian is building and I’m already looking forward to the next set of games under his leadership.”

Meanwhile, Irish FA chief executive Patrick Nelson said: “The Irish FA Board gave its full backing and I’m delighted we have again secured Ian’s services. He is the right man to navigate the challenges ahead as well as being a great ambassador for the organisation.”
