Northern Ireland boss Ian Baraclough offers Ethan Galbraith hint ahead of Romania clash

Northern Ireland fans hope to see a glimpse of the future tonight with Manchester United starlet Ethan Galbraith itching to play a part against Romania.

Galbraith, who recently signed a new long term contract at Old Trafford, made his international debut as a substitute in last year’s friendly win over Luxembourg.

And the 19-year-old, who is highly rated at United, has a chance of earning further gametime in the final group game of the Nations League campaign.

Captain Steven Davis, Jordan Thompson, George Saville and Corry Evans are all missing from the engine room for tonight’s Group B1 clash at Windsor Park.

Asked if Galbraith might feature, Baraclough said: “He may well do - I think everybody’s interested to see how Ethan gets on.

“We’re a smaller squad for the third game of a triple header and it stretches us. It gives an opportunity for the likes of Ethan and others to maybe get some game-time.

“I don’t know yet, but there is a chance, of course there is.”

Baraclough, who worked with Galbraith during his time as U21s coach, recently likened the technically gifted playmaker as “our little Xavi or Iniesta”.

The talented teen is being tipped for big things at United and made his debut for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men in last season’s Europa League.

Baraclough said: “The last six months have told me that he’s grown up as an individual and as a player. Man United are really happy with his development and he’s signed a new deal.

“Ethan is here on merit and having him with the squad for 10 or 11 days, he is gaining massive experience being around the other lads in the group.

“It’s my job to bring young players through, give them an opportunity, and see how they get on. Ethan is one of those, along with Ali McCann and Dan Ballard.

“We’ve seen that given the chance, they are capable, but they have to go and step up.”

Northern Ireland, with no wins in nine Nations League games across two editions of the competition, go into their final pool game bottom of the group and in danger of relegation.
