Northern Ireland boss Ian Baraclough critical of Switzerland penalty award

Northern Ireland boss Ian Baraclough voiced his frustration after Switzerland were awarded a penalty in Wednesday's World Cup qualifier in Belfast.

Austrian referee Harald Lechner pointed to the spot after Michael Smith tangled with Ruben Vargas inside the box.

Baraclough felt the decision was harsh on his team, but Bailey Peacock-Farrell restored the feel-good factor around Windsor Park by saving Haris Seferović's spot-kick.

"The guy got in front of Michael Smith. There was a hand on his back but there was certainly no push there," Baraclough told Sky Sports.

"By the time the collision happened, the ball was in mid air and on its way out. There was no danger.

"The ball wasn't reaching the player, and he threw himself to the ground because he knew the ball was going out of play. That's my argument with it.

"The letter of the law says there was a hand on him, but there are so many incidents inside the box when people have hands on each other.

"If you are going to do that, and people throwing themselves to the ground, then you are going to have 10 penalties in a game."

When asked whether it was easier to give the so-called bigger nations penalty decisions, Baraclough said: "Your words, not mine."

Baraclough hailed goalkeeper Peacock-Farrell after his penalty save against Seferović - the Sheffield Wednesday shot-stopper's second in as many games.

"The opposition are probably looking at him now and see his record," Baraclough added.

"That's four penalties or something this season? And two big ones for us against Lithuania and Switzerland.

"It is great having a goalkeeper like that, that you know is on top of his game and looks solid and comfortable."
