Northern Ireland boss Ian Baraclough adds Damien Johnson to backroom team

New Northern Ireland manager Ian Baraclough has added former international midfielder Damien Johnson to his coaching staff.

Johnson - capped 56 times between 1999 and 2010 - joins Jimmy Nicholl, Austin MacPhee and Steve Harper in Baraclough's backroom team.

The 41-year-old is currently first team technical coach and head of player development at EFL Championship club Blackburn Rovers.

“Damien is a young, dynamic coach doing great things and a familiar face to many in the squad. As far as the international stage goes, he knows what it's all about," Baraclough told the Irish FA's website.

"I’m thankful to Tony Mowbray for allowing Damien to join us for what will be a crucial period of football for the men’s senior team."

Northern Ireland fans will welcome Johnson's involvement with the current team.

The industrious midfielder enjoyed many stellar nights in the green shirt, notably in the 1-0 win over England in Belfast in 2005.

He was previously Under 23s manager at Blackburn were he led the team to a fifth-place finish in the PL2 top flight in 2019 and secured the Lancashire FA Senior Cup.

The season before he guided Blackburn Under 21s to the Premier League 2 Division 2 title.
